XLVI

Y cómo se llama ese mes
que está entre Diciembre y Enero?

Con qué derecho numeraron
las doce uvas del racimo?

Por qué no nos dieron extensos
meses que duren todo el año?

No te engañó la primavera
con besos que no florecieron?

And what is the name of the month
that falls between December and January?

By what authority did they number
the twelve grapes of the cluster?

Why didn't they give us longer
months that last all year?

Did spring never deceive you
with kisses that didn't blossom?

Mother Nature

Watercolor on paper by Belen Islas

I am blue

watercolor on paper by Belen Islas

You told me: It is time to go.
And I knew it: that was the end.
Since that day I am blue...

Tu me dijite:  Es tiempo
Y supe que: Ese era el final.
 desde ese día soy azul...

ParisObey

I did this collage for my Mixed Media Class. The assignment was to select a famous artist, celebrity, place or piece of art and visually deface it. So, I chose the work of Shepard Fairey and I mixed it with Paris Hilton. By the way "I don't really think, I just walk" is a real quote from Paris.

Old Memories and Young Hopes

A couple of days ago I finished two new collages that represent the fortune found in a cookie. Here is one.
The fortune read "we must have old memories and young hopes." Without any doubt it is a beautiful and meaningful phrase.
I used an image of an old man, as well as paper and wood.

My grasshopper

This little animal is not exactly similar to real grasshoppers, but I made him thinking about the grasshoppers I saw as a child. It is made out of cardboard and paper.

Two weeks ago I finished reading "La Reina del Sur" in Spanish. It has been a long time since I read something in that language. And I have to say that to read this book was a pleasant surprise. It was more interesting that I thought at the beginning of the book.
The story concerns the life of a Mexican girl finding her way into the drug traffic world. I could write a review, but it will be best if  you read it. You won't be disappointed.

BECAUSE IT IS JUST ONE...

I always say it...
it is fundamental in this trip called Life...
the heart feels an impulse... an instant...
a way... we have to follow it....

Go for your dreams! Happy Life!
Make the best of the day...
Don't let it finish without having fed your dreams.
Don't let anybody take your right
to express yourself, which is almost a duty.

Don't abandon your desires to make
your life something extraordinary.
Don't stop believing that words and
poetry can change the world...

Because whatever happens, our essence is intact.
We are humans full of possibilities.
Life is desert and oasis, it pulls us down, hurts us,
teaches us, makes us into the stars of
our own story...

Even if the wind blows against us,
the powerful work continues.
You can contribute a stanza.
Never stop dreaming,
because in dreams people are free.

A translation of my post of Sep. 30th.

PALABRAS...

PORQUE ES SOLO UNA..

Siempre lo digo...
es fundamental en este viaje llamado Vida...
el corazón siente un impulso... un instante...
un rumbo... hay que seguirlo...

Ve tras tus sueños! Feliz Vida!

nuestra propia historia...

Aunque el viento sople en contra,
la poderosa obra continúa.
Tú puedes aportar una estrofa.
No dejes nunca de soñar,
porque en sueños es libre el hombre

PALABRAS COMO ALIMENTO PARA MI ALMA.
ALGUNA VEZ ALGUIEN ESCRIBIO ESTO SIN SABER EL EFECTO QUE TENDRIA EN MI.

flying Away

Cyanotype, Belen Islas

Fragmento  del poema Migración de  Pablo Neruda

Todo el día una línea,
un escuadrón de plumas,
un navío
palpitaba en el aire,
atravesaba
el pequeño infinito
de la ventana desde donde busco,
interrogo, trabajo, acecho, aguardo.

Fragment of Migration by Pablo Neruda
translation:  Jack Schmitt

All day column after column,
a squadron of feathers,
a fluttering airborne
ship
crossed
the tiny infinity
of the window where I research,
question, work, observe, wait.

The Bee

(Watercolor on blackpaper. Belen Islas)

Bee

BUZZ! goes the bee,
Hour after hour,
BUZZ! goes the bee
From flower to flower.

Sucking out the nectar
Flying it home.
Storing up the nectar
In the honeycomb.

BUZZ! goes the bee,
Making hone so sweet.
Bee makes the honey
That I love to eat!

Close Your Eyes

Rest, close your eyes and rest a little more because your journey has been endless. Rest five seconds more because your road is long.

Ardiente, amado, hambriento, desolado,
bello como la dura, la sagrada blasfemia;
cuartelaria.

After reading a couple of books about women in the Mexican Revolution by Elena Poniatowska and another old and beautiful book about Mexico called "A Treasury of Mexican Folkways" by Frances Toor, I couldn't stop myself from doing a pair of paintings of those heroes who had no name, face or recognition... Brave women that fought in a place and time for men.

May no one ever extinguish your light...

May your inner sun never die.

Painting with tape

I was looking for an explanation for this work, but I couldn't come up with anything.
For some reason the words that describe my painting can't stay together. They don't seem to match:
Blues     Oranges
Tape      Painting
Ocean    Sun

These words clash. They don't combine well...
It is like trying to dance with discordant music.
At the end I give up; the explanation never occurs and what remains is the simple appreciation of what I made.

No explanation--just contemplation.

OCTAVIO PAZ

ENTRE LO QUE VEO Y DIGO...
A Roman Jakobson

Entre lo que veo y digo,
Entre lo que digo y callo,
entre lo que callo y sueño
entre lo que sueño y olvido
La poesía.
Se desliza entre el sí y el no;
dice
lo que callo,
calla
lo que digo,
sueña
lo que olvido.
No es un decir:
es un hacer.
Es un hacer
que es un decir.
La poesía
se dice y se oye:
es real
Y apenas digo es real,
se disipa.
Así es más real?
Idea palpable:
palabra
impalpable:
la poesía
va y viene
entre lo que es
y lo que no es.
Teje reflejos
y los desteje.
La poesía
siembra ojos en la páginas
Los ojos hablan
las palabras miran,
las miradas piensan.
Oír
los pensamientos,
ver
lo que decimos
tocar
el cuerpo
de la idea.
Los ojos se cierran
Las palabras se abren.

A mix of languages

Walking through the streets of Venice Beach, I found this sign.

Los Angeles has perhaps the most Hispanics of any city in the United States, and a mix of Spanish and English is common among the residents. Nevertheless, sometimes this mix does not yield totally accurate results.

The sign says "Se abla Spanol" but it should read "Se habla español."

Another Alebrije

_... And then, fiercely angry, they dispossessed us, took from us that which we had treasured: the word, which is the ark of memory. Ever since those days they burned and are consumed with the wood of the pyre. The smoke rises in the wind and vanishes. The faceless ashes remain. So that you  and those younger than you could come and a small blow is all you need, only a small blow...

The Flower of Wishes

I don't know the name of this flower, but I used to call it " the flower of wishes" because you blow on it after asking for a wish, your desire come true.
So, my wish for today is: ......
I almost forgot, the trick is to keep your wish secret.

Lights

Ayse told me that these pictures look like candies.
And I think the same.
Candies for your eyes, for my eyes.
Candies of many flavors. Red, blue, green, yellow.

My favorite is green. It tastes really sweet at first glance but,
after you see it for a while the hint of citrus grabs your eye.

Blue is different; its savor is intense from beginning to end.
It is sweet as anise; strong from the first look.

Red is just for special occasions. It tastes like pomegranate with strawberry.
Exotic, powerful. To not be overwhelmed by its flavor,
you can observe it just for a little while.

And yellow is for looking at every day.
It has a mango essence that makes your day happy.

Grandfather

My grandfather was a veterinarian by vocation,
storyteller by love, and alchemist by determination.
Also, he was a voracious reader of newspapers, chemistry, history, fairytales,
philosophy, mathematics, instruction on boxes, or anything readable.

He loved my Grandmother, my Mother, my Uncles, my Aunts,
my Brother, my Cousins, me,the dogs, his horses, the chickens,
the pigs, the sheep, and all the animals on his farm.

He used to water my Grandmother's garden every morning and
said a prayer every night.
He used to watch TV with his eyes closed.
He believed that revolution hadn't yet finished, and that garlic is
the remedy for almost everything.
He was my father, my hero, my Abuelito.

The Magic Box

Today is the Chinese New Year. To start it well, my friend Crystal sent me a box full of magic objects.
One of them is a paper cut book of "super powerful" Chinese Zodiac  symbols (which are essential to see the future).
Here is another paper cut book with gorgeous symbols that, obviously, I don't understand but the beauty is overwhelming.
A magician's bag to keep all your enchanted beans, potions, and spells.
A table runner that also can be used as a scarf when you are learning new conjuring tricks.
And an amazing letter that has the power to remind me the importance of a friendship.

Happy Chinese New Year, Crystal!

The Chess Horse

Who could like a horse
that doesn't know how run, eat or neigh,
that doesn't make any sound when he gallops...
Maybe just those who care for chess
can love a horse like that.

A quién le gustaría un caballo
que no sabe correr, comer o relinchar,
que no hace ruiditos al cabalgar.
Quizá solo a esos que les importa
el ajedrez pueden amar un caballo así.

Marilyn's garden

One of these days, I will learn how to keep a flower alive. I can do something that almost nobody can do... make a cactus disappear in one month (unbelievable but true).
For that reason, I have to take "souls" from the gardens of others, through photographs. I am sure that if one day, I have a garden, it will look like a desert. I don't have any other solution than to keep taking pictures of others' gardens to create my own.
