New Member of the Bestiario Book

There has been really unusual weather in Los Angeles. Rainy days, long and gray rainy days. I am not used to this kind of weather.

The rain keeps me inside the house more time that I would like. However, it is not all bad; I am using my time at home to catch up with my drawing. Recently my dear Moleskines have been a little abandoned.

Hemos tenido un clima no muy común en Los Angeles. Días lluviosos, largos y grises días lluviosos. Siendo sincera, no estoy acostumbrada a este tipo de clima.

La lluvia me ha mantenido en casa por más tiempo del que me gustaría. Sin embargo, no es totalmente malo; mi tiempo en casa lo uso para dibujar un poco. Ya que recientemente mis queridos moleskines habían estado un poco abandonados.

Alebrijes Parade

When I try to give a definition of "alebrije," I find myself in a big dilemma. Maybe because there is not a clear definition of this creature. Many people think that the origin of these fantastic creatures belongs exclusively to the artisan Pedro Linares and his hallucinations, but I have my own theory (to be honest it is not just my own opinion).

Imaginative beings have existed in human imagination all around the world. And we could make a endless list of fantastic creatures from different cultures such as the Greeks, African tribes, the Japanese or Aztecs just to mention some. And looking around we can notice that the only difference between an alebrije and a fantastic creature from an African tribe is the name.

An alebrije is an imaginary creature, usually a mix of 2 or more prehispanic animals. An alebrije is made of paper mâché or wood but it can be made from other materials, like stone, recycled material, etc. The use of colors in these creatures may seem uncontrolled, almost wild, but you have to know what you are doing to use color the way that an alebrije uses it. And the decoration has to resemble nature or indigenous art.

With this information in mind when I went to Mexico last week I was excited to see a parade of alebrijes. It was an interesting experience. I found myself in the middle of a parade full of imaginary creatures. Some of them seemed to be part of a nightmare and other resembled more a greek god than an alebrije, but in the end the experience was unforgettable and full of inspiration.

Cuando intento dar una definición de la palabra alebrije, me encuentro con un gran dilema. Quizá porque no hay una definición clara de este tipo de creación. Mucha gente piensa que el origen de estas fantásticos seres pertenece exclusivamente al artesano Pedro Linares y sus alucinaciones, pero yo tengo mi propia teoría (siendo honesta no es solo mia).

Estos seres fantasticos han existido en la imaginación de seres humanos en todo el mundo. Y podríamos hacer una lista infinita de criaturas increibles de diversas culturas tales como los Griegos, las tribus africanas, japoneses, o los Aztecas solo por mencionar algunos. Y mirando alrededor podemos notar que la única diferencia entre un alebrije y un animal fantástico de una tribu africana es el nombre.

Un alebrije es ser imaginario, generalmente una mezcla de 2 o más animales y estos solían ser prehispanicos. Un alebrije se hace generalmente del papel maché o de la madera, pero puede crearse de otros materiales, como roca, material reciclable, etc. El uso de colores puede parecer casi salvaje, incontrolable, pero tiene que tener un entendimiento claro del color. Y la decoración tiene una semejanza a la naturaleza o arte indígena.

Con esta información, emocionada fui a México la semana pasada para ver un desfile de alebrijes. Fue una experiencia interesante. Me encontré con un desfile lleno de creaturas imaginarias. Algunas de ellas parecían ser parte de la pesadilla y otros más parecían un dios griego que un alebrije, pero al final la experiencia fue inolvidable y me llenó de inspiración para crear mas alebrijes.

La semana pasada estuve trabajando en esta idea para una pintura. Ahora que estoy trabajando en ella, los colores que elegí son mucho más profundos, fuertes y obscuros. Quizá la siguiente semana podrás ver el resultado final.

Can I be an addict?

Do I have an addiction?

I asked myself that question a couple of days ago when I bought a new Moleskine sketch book.

I realized that I have all the symptoms and I was totally in denial.

Am I an addict for Moleskine journals just because I use Moleskine's agendas, sketch books, watercolor books, japanese folding books, and plain, squared and lined notebooks? I go nowhere without a Moleskine. Can you call it an obsession just because I am an active member of My Moleskine group in Flickr as well as Moleskine Alchemists, Moleskinerie, Moleskine City, Moleskine's Snobs and Moleskine: One page at a time? Or because I follow the Moleskinerie blog or any blog with Moleskine in it or because I list the Moleskine webpage as one of my favorite sites?

At the beginning I thought that I was alone with this problem, but in searching for a cure (and I found no help at all) I found some interesting articles about the Moleskine wave. These articles talk about the cult or evangelization of Moleskine. Can it be true? Can I be just one more of the huge group of people that can't stop buying, using and thinking about this product?

How can it not be an addiction, when this notebook is so good? Moleskine products have an appeal that I can't resist. I love the soft texture of the cover, the elegant and neutral colors and the wonderful quality of each page. And I just can't resist the intelligent binding that they use (because the old spiral notebooks are just so annoying).

This company also conquered the heart of the movie industry. The first time I saw it was in one of my favorite movies, Amelie. Since then I have seen it in many others like The Devil Wears Prada and The Da Vinci Code. It's obvious the movie people love it too.

How can I stop loving this brand when I find it so important in my life.

However, a real conflict began when I discovered that Moleskine does not appear to be an eco-friendly company. I am trying to do my part with ecological problems in our society. But Moleskine may not be helping... and sketchbooks from other manufacturers are ugly or over-designed, or their quality leaves too much to wish for, etc.

So my problem is double now--I have an addiction for this product and I am not helping the environment by buying it.

HELP!!!

Tengo una adicción?

Eso fue lo que me pregunté hace un par de días cuando compraba un nuevo Moleskine.

Se que tengo todos los síntomas de una adicta y he estado en total negación del problema.

Realmente piensas que soy una adicta de Moleskine Diarios? Sólo porque tengo Moleskine agendas, cuadernos para acuarelas, cuadernos de dibujo, cuadriculado y de rayas? Porque no voy a ninguna parte sin mi Moleskine. Se le puede llamar obsesión? Porque soy un miembro activo de My Molesline grupo en Flickr, tanto como Moleskine Alchemists, Moleskinerie, Moleskine City, Moleskine's Snobs and Moleskine: One page at a time. O porque soy un seguidor del blog Moleskinerie o cualquier blog que tenga que ver con Moleskine. Porque la página de Moleskine esta en mi lista de sitios favoritos.

Al principio pensé que estaba sola en esto, pero cuando buscaba una solución (que por cierto no encontré solución alguna) descibrí algunos interesantes artículos acerca de la ola Moleskine. En ellos se habla de lo que se considera casi un culto o evangelización alrededor de esta marca. Puede ser verdad? Soy un persona más en ese enorme grupo alrededor del mundo que no puede parar de comprar, usar y pensar en estos pequeños cuadernos?

Cómo no ser un adicto de Moleskine? Sí este cuaderno es increíble. Y simplemente no lo puedo resistir. No puedo para de amar la suave textura, su elegante y discreta cubierta, la calidad del papel. Y su irresistible encuadernación (porque los espirales en los cuadernos ordinarios son tan molestos).

Esta compañía también conquistó el corazón de la gente en el negocio del cine. La primera vez que ví a Moleskine fue en una de mis películas favoritas, Amelie. Desde entonces lo he visto en muchos otros films como The Devil Wears Prada or The Da Vinci Code. Es obvious que la comunidad del cine adora también este producto.

Como puedo dejar de querer este cuaderno cuando ocupa una parte importante en mi vida.

Pero el conflicto real empezó cuando descubrí que Moleskine no perece ser una empresa con mucha conciencia ecológica. Cómo puedo hacer mi parte si el producto que compro no ayuda mucho?....

Y los otros cuadernos de dibujo son horribles, sobre-diseñados, su calidad deja mucho que desear, etc.

Entonces mi problema se duplicó, tengo una adicción por este producto y no ayudo con los problemas ambientales comprandolo.

Female Dragon

A long time ago, a teacher asked what animal I would like to be. After thinking for a while I told her that I would like to be a dragon. At that time I didn't know that my desire could come true. To my joy and surprise, my chinese zodiac symbol is the dragon. What a happy discovery. 

By the way, I forgot to add wings to this dragon. In another drawing I'll include them.

Hace mucho tiempo, una maestra me preguntó ...Qué animal me gustaría ser?Después de pensarlo un rato respondí que me gustaría ser un dragón. En ese momento no sabía que mi deseo  podr&iaacute; ser realidad. Para mi sorpresa y alegría, mi signo zodiacal chino es Dragón. Este ha sido un muy feliz  descubrimiento.

por cierto, se me olvidó ponerle alas a este dibujo. En otra illustración incluiré  alas muy grandes.

Imaginary Snake

For almost a year I was working on my snake, and a couple of weeks ago I finished it.

I know... It took me too much time, but it was because every time I was ready to work on this piece, another more urgent thing was waiting for me. But, by the end of 2008 I decided this alebrije must be finished.

First, I did the drawing that later became the model for my little sculpture (well, not too little).

I used wire and paper to create my magic creature.

Por casi un año estuve trabajando en mi serpiente alebrije y hace un par de semanas la terminé.

Sí, lo sé... Me tomó mucho tiempo terminarla, es que cada vez que estaba dispuesta a trabajar en esta pieza, otra cosa estaba esperando mi atención con más urgencia. Hasta que al final del 2008 decidí que este alebrije debía de ser terminado.

Primero hice la acuarela y ésta se convirtió en la base para mi pequeña escultura (o no tan pequeña).

El material usado para crear mi creatura mágica fue papel y alambre.

Este fue el primer alebrije que hice. Quizá no sea una obra de arte, pero si fue la llave que abrió la puerta a otro mundo lleno de color y nuevas posibilidades de expresión.
