Colorful Puebla

Since my return from my trip to Mexico a couple of weeks ago, I have been trying to share these colorful images of Puebla with all of you. But for some reason or another it wasn't possible until today.

When I used to live in Mexico, I remember people talking about Mexico's fearless use of colors. I never really completely realized why some people make such a big deal about that. However, now that a live in a city when the main range of colors goes from white to gray with some touches of cream and pastel colors, I clearly see why people are surprised by the vivid colors in Mexico.

In this past visit to Puebla, a city two hours away from Mexico City, my spirit rose full of energy and happiness just from walking the streets of this vigorous place. The variety of colors went from electric to aqua blues, vivacious reds to maroons, dazzling yellows to ochres, spring green to deep ocean green, flourishing pink to pale pink, every color in every shade and tone. The soul revitalizes with the beauty of colors.

Desde mi regreso de mi viaje a México hace un par de semanas, he tratado de compartir con todos ustedes estas coloridas imágenes de Puebla. Pero, por alguna razón u otra no había sido posible hasta ahora.

Recuerdo que cuando viví en México mucha gente hablaba del temerario uso de colores en mi país. Sin embargo, nunca entendo realmente porque la gente de otros paises les parecía ésto tan interesante. Ahora que vivo en una ciudad donde los colores principales van de blancos a grises con toques de crema y algunas veces colores pastel. Realmente puedo ver porque algunos extranjeros se sorprenden por el uso de color en México.

En esta visita pasada a Puebla mi espíritu se elevó lleno de energía con el simple hecho de caminar por las calles de esa vigorosa ciudad. La variedad de colores era mucha. Pude ver desde azules eléctricos hasta azules aqua, desde vividos rojos hasta marrones, desde brillantes amarillos hasta ocres, desde verdes primavera hasta verdes del fondo del mar, desde flourescentes rosas hasta rosas palídos, casi todos los colores en todos sus tonos.

Ante tanta variedad de color el alma no puede mas que renovarse.

Leaves Collection

The truth is that I couldn't wait for too much longer to share with everyone this gift from my niece.

My sweet little niece surprised me with a beautiful collection of leaves. She told me that she made it so I could remember the family's garden while I am away.

This is the most enchanted present I have ever received.

Mi pequeña sobrina me sorprendió al regalarme esta colección de hojas que según sus propias palabras debo ver cuando me encuentro lejos de casa y asi recordar su jardín.

Éste es el regalo más encantador que he recibido hasta ahora.

Color In The Gray City

In my trip to Mexico last month, I made a stop in Mexico City. Usually the place has a grey look that contrasts with the colorful dress style of people.

En mi ultimo viaje en México, hice una parada en la Cuidad de México. Usualmente el lugar tiene una apariencia gris que contrasta con el colorido estilo de vestir de su gente.

Electric pink and fire purple were the fashionable colors in the city, but the thing that captured my attention was the graffiti around the Palace of Bellas Artes in downtown.

Un rosa eléctrico y un morado en llamas fueron los colores de moda en la ciudad, sin embargo lo que capturó mi atención esta vez, fue el graffiti que rodeaba al Palacio de Bellas Artes en el centro.

Young artists covered the palace with meaningful graffiti some months ago. I remember reading about it so it was really excited see it in person.

Jóvenes artistas cubrieron el palacio con interesante graffiti algunos meses atrás. Recuerdo haber leído acerca de este evento asi que fue muy emocionante verlo en persona.

My second stop was a small town in Hidalgo State where I witnessed a parade celebrating the anniversary of the Mexican Revolution, but I'll talk about it in my next post.

Alebrijes Parade

When I try to give a definition of "alebrije," I find myself in a big dilemma. Maybe because there is not a clear definition of this creature. Many people think that the origin of these fantastic creatures belongs exclusively to the artisan Pedro Linares and his hallucinations, but I have my own theory (to be honest it is not just my own opinion).

Imaginative beings have existed in human imagination all around the world. And we could make a endless list of fantastic creatures from different cultures such as the Greeks, African tribes, the Japanese or Aztecs just to mention some. And looking around we can notice that the only difference between an alebrije and a fantastic creature from an African tribe is the name.

An alebrije is an imaginary creature, usually a mix of 2 or more prehispanic animals. An alebrije is made of paper mâché or wood but it can be made from other materials, like stone, recycled material, etc. The use of colors in these creatures may seem uncontrolled, almost wild, but you have to know what you are doing to use color the way that an alebrije uses it. And the decoration has to resemble nature or indigenous art.

With this information in mind when I went to Mexico last week I was excited to see a parade of alebrijes. It was an interesting experience. I found myself in the middle of a parade full of imaginary creatures. Some of them seemed to be part of a nightmare and other resembled more a greek god than an alebrije, but in the end the experience was unforgettable and full of inspiration.

Cuando intento dar una definición de la palabra alebrije, me encuentro con un gran dilema. Quizá porque no hay una definición clara de este tipo de creación. Mucha gente piensa que el origen de estas fantásticos seres pertenece exclusivamente al artesano Pedro Linares y sus alucinaciones, pero yo tengo mi propia teoría (siendo honesta no es solo mia).

Estos seres fantasticos han existido en la imaginación de seres humanos en todo el mundo. Y podríamos hacer una lista infinita de criaturas increibles de diversas culturas tales como los Griegos, las tribus africanas, japoneses, o los Aztecas solo por mencionar algunos. Y mirando alrededor podemos notar que la única diferencia entre un alebrije y un animal fantástico de una tribu africana es el nombre.

Un alebrije es ser imaginario, generalmente una mezcla de 2 o más animales y estos solían ser prehispanicos. Un alebrije se hace generalmente del papel maché o de la madera, pero puede crearse de otros materiales, como roca, material reciclable, etc. El uso de colores puede parecer casi salvaje, incontrolable, pero tiene que tener un entendimiento claro del color. Y la decoración tiene una semejanza a la naturaleza o arte indígena.

Con esta información, emocionada fui a México la semana pasada para ver un desfile de alebrijes. Fue una experiencia interesante. Me encontré con un desfile lleno de creaturas imaginarias. Algunas de ellas parecían ser parte de la pesadilla y otros más parecían un dios griego que un alebrije, pero al final la experiencia fue inolvidable y me llenó de inspiración para crear mas alebrijes.
