Pages of my Lost Sketchbook

For a while, this little sketchbook was lost. Fortunately, I found it and I rediscovered my sketches from the beginning of the year. Now, I remember that I went to downtown Los Angeles and I draw the little church next to Olvera Street. The left page has the ticket from the Rothko exhibition at the MOMA.
I am really happy to have it back!

Perdido y Encontrado

I almost forgot this group of images that I took some time ago. They are strong images from powerful almost forgotten times.

The Origin, Story Of A Blog

This is a letter that not too long ago I wrote for a magazine submission and I wanted to share it with you.

I never totally understood how difficult it could be to live in a country where you don’t know the language until it was too late. So, there I was, a foreigner lost in L.A. trying to learn the language and wondering what to do with my life.

Anything is easy when you cannot communicate properly, such as getting off at the wrong bus stop, ordering the wrong food, etc. And simple tasks--getting a coffee, going shopping or explaining to the doctor that you don’t need more vaccinations because you already have them--get so complicated.

My level of frustration reached its high point when one of my English teachers encouraged us to practice our grammar by blogging. It was quite difficult.

However, it turned out to be the best idea ever… not just for practicing my English but because it became the outlet that I was waiting for. It is like having your own gallery where friends, family and strangers can share your passion, work, dreams and every little thing in life. Slowly my list of blog-friends is growing and my wonderful experiences are growing with it.

The smiling people of Los Angeles

I have been in Los Angeles more time than I wanted to be. I can't say that I fell in love with LA at first sight, but I have to admit I like it more now.

The weather is nice, the beach is close and the people smile a lot. Coming from Mexico City where people are always stressed, angry, and avoid any visual contact (to avoid physical contact in Mexico City is almost imposible). Finding smiling people in this other super crowded city was a great discovery.  Actually I haven't totally understood why people smile so much in Los Angeles, but I like it.

Here are some things that I still don't feel comfortable with :
The gray-white look of the place. It looks like it has been exposed for so long to the sun that the city lost the intensity of the colors.
The public transportation is not enough for the size of the place.
And the lack of  cultural activities.
I don't know how much longer I will be here but I am starting to see the good face of LA.

A mix of languages

Walking through the streets of Venice Beach, I found this sign.

Los Angeles has perhaps the most Hispanics of any city in the United States, and a mix of Spanish and English is common among the residents. Nevertheless, sometimes this mix does not yield totally accurate results.

The sign says "Se abla Spanol" but it should read "Se habla español."

Downtown LA
