Being raised in a small town in the central area of Mexico, I grew up listening to many local expressions.
I remember when someone would say “ No sabe ni calentar una tortilla”. Although this literally means “doesn’t know how to warm a tortilla,” people use this expression when someone doesn’t know how to cook. Because in Mexico the tortilla is not just a thing to eat. It is one if the basic elements of the Mexican cuisine.
To heat a tortilla is the most basic thing to do, an everyday activity, a knowledge that is not taught but known forever. So the expression “no sabe ni calentar una tortilla” seems an exaggeration. After all, to warm a tortilla is not a big deal, right? How difficult can it be?
Now I live in a different country where the tortilla is a curiosity, next to pita bread in the aisle where foreign products are. I think about this expression and I can’t stop laughing when I find instructions how to heat a tortilla on the reverse of the package. Well, it seems now we have to change the expression or use a different one because today if you don’t know how to heat a tortilla you just look at the instructions.
By the way another good expression to point out the same thing is “ Se le quema el agua” --she or he burns the water.
No sabe ni calentar una tortilla
Por haber crecido en un pequeño pueblo en el área central de México, crecí escuchando muchas expresiones locales. Recuerdo una muy claramente “No sabe ni calentar una tortilla”. Siendo la tortilla uno de los elementos básicos de la cocina mexicana. Calentar una tortilla es una de las actividad de cada día, nadie te enseña como calentarla pero lo sabes desde siempre. Entonces eso de no sabe calentar una tortilla es solamente una exageración. Después de todo que tan difícil pude ser calentar una?
Ahora que vivo un otra país y las tortillas solo las encuentras en el supermercado junto al pan arabe y productos extranjeros o exóticos. Pienso en esa expresión y no puedo para de reír al ver que al reverso del paquete instrucciones de como calentarlas. Parece que tendremos que cambiar la expresión, porque sino se sabe calentar una tortilla ahora sólo tendrás que buscar las intrucciones.
