Chiapas

_... And then, fiercely angry, they dispossessed us, took from us that which we had treasured: the word, which is the ark of memory. Ever since those days they burned and are consumed with the wood of the pyre. The smoke rises in the wind and vanishes. The faceless ashes remain. So that you  and those younger than you could come and a small blow is all you need, only a small blow...

The Flower of Wishes

I don't know the name of this flower, but I used to call it " the flower of wishes" because you blow on it after asking for a wish, your desire come true.
So, my wish for today is: ......
I almost forgot, the trick is to keep your wish secret.

Lights

Ayse told me that these pictures look like candies.
And I think the same.
Candies for your eyes, for my eyes.
Candies of many flavors. Red, blue, green, yellow.

My favorite is green. It tastes really sweet at first glance but,
after you see it for a while the hint of citrus grabs your eye.

Blue is different; its savor is intense from beginning to end.
It is sweet as anise; strong from the first look.

Red is just for special occasions. It tastes like pomegranate with strawberry.
Exotic, powerful. To not be overwhelmed by its flavor,
you can observe it just for a little while.

And yellow is for looking at every day.
It has a mango essence that makes your day happy.

Grandfather

My grandfather was a veterinarian by vocation,
storyteller by love, and alchemist by determination.
Also, he was a voracious reader of newspapers, chemistry, history, fairytales,
philosophy, mathematics, instruction on boxes, or anything readable.

He loved my Grandmother, my Mother, my Uncles, my Aunts,
my Brother, my Cousins, me,the dogs, his horses, the chickens,
the pigs, the sheep, and all the animals on his farm.

He used to water my Grandmother's garden every morning and
said a prayer every night.
He used to watch TV with his eyes closed.
He believed that revolution hadn't yet finished, and that garlic is
the remedy for almost everything.
He was my father, my hero, my Abuelito.

The Magic Box

Today is the Chinese New Year. To start it well, my friend Crystal sent me a box full of magic objects.
One of them is a paper cut book of "super powerful" Chinese Zodiac  symbols (which are essential to see the future).
Here is another paper cut book with gorgeous symbols that, obviously, I don't understand but the beauty is overwhelming.
A magician's bag to keep all your enchanted beans, potions, and spells.
A table runner that also can be used as a scarf when you are learning new conjuring tricks.
And an amazing letter that has the power to remind me the importance of a friendship.

Happy Chinese New Year, Crystal!
